Congratulations Graduates of STEC Class 6 On March 7, five graduates from the Statler STEC #6 class received their graduation certificates in a ceremony at the Olmsted Center for Sight. After seven weeks of intense computer and classroom training, these graduates are poised for great success in the workplace. The ceremony began with Statler Director Jeffrey Hirschfelt, CHA, addressing the crowd and recognizing the tremendous growth experienced by the students. "On the first day, we all new this would be a great ride for you," said Hirschfelt, "We always marvel at how fast the time goes leading up to graduation, and all of you have made the best of that time. I congratulate you all on a job well done. And remember, Statler will always be at your side." Keynote Speaker Karen Moore (STEC Class 3 graduate) reflected on how much Statler has meant to her for the education, employment opportunities and personal growth. Her theme to students was to have them SOAR. S standing for Special; to stand apart as courageous individuals who may have come from perhaps hundreds of miles away, and all of whom left a certain comfort zone to experience a program which will dramtically change their lives. O stands for Optimistic; seeing the glass as half full and adding to that through life-long learning. Moore said that A stands for Able; not just in the skills Statler graduates have, but also in their desire to prove how much they have to offer. Proving to all that regardless of a visual or physical disability, they are capable. And R stands for Responsibility; taking personal responsibility to do the best possible job and useing the skills aquired through training, and also being repsponsible to ask for assistance to assure the best performance possible without compromise. Ms Moore closed by encouraging all gradustes to "SOAR to your Destiny!" Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Visits Statler
Statler Center Observes 12th Anniversary Celebrating the Training and Employment Success of nearly 400 Graduates Nearly 200 people came together to celebrate the National Statler Center’s Anniversary; the celebration was held in conjunction with the graduation of our 34th Hospitality class.
Bob Bennett of the Statler Foundation served as MC at the Anniversary event, and he represented the passion and personality that is Statler. Mr. Bennett first introduced Class 34 Student Speaker Brian Follett (Wakefield, RI). Brian reflected on the cause of his vision loss (a tick bite that resulted in Lyme disease) and described how he has overcome the resulting vision loss—through a winning attitude, desire for learning, and personal growth. He reflected that those same character traits are held by all his classmates. Each student brings unique personal experiences to the classroom, and yet they share a common goal for education and career success.Brian was followed by Aaron Siegel, of the Herb Siegel Foundation, another generous benefactor.
