October 2009 Themes and Concepts

Concepts, Skills, and Activities
 
Colors and Shapes – We will continue to work on the rest of our colors and shapes. We will discuss the colors black, white, brown, orange, and pink. We will finish up with the shape oval.
 
Letters – We will introduce the letter ‘A’ and work on letter recognition.
 
Science – Apple exploration, we will explore the parts of an apple. Plant apple seeds. Introduce pumpkins, Explore parts of a pumpkin. Talk about parts of a plant, what a plant needs, how to care for a plant. We will discuss farm animals. What animals are farm animals? What do farm animals eat? Make animal pictures. Talk about barns? Field trip to Becker Farms.
 
Pre-Math – Calendar activities, rote counting, matching, sorting, colors, shapes, one-to-one correspondence, number recognition, stacking, and patterns.
Fine Motor Skills – Cutting, gluing, coloring, painting, and play dough.
Gross Motor – Dance and Movement at circle time, playground (weather permitting), stretching exercises, and bean bag catch.

October we will start “Show and Tell” on Fridays – your child may bring in one item to “show and tell” the class.
 
September 2009 Themes and Concepts
Welcome to school, meet and greet your classmates, classroom rules and routines, manners, and labeling and naming objects around the room.
Concepts, Skills, and Activities
Colors and Shapes – During the month of September we will be learning about the colors red, blue, green, yellow, and purple. We will also be learning about the shapes square, circle, triangle, rectangle, and diamond.
Science – We will be learning about pets. We will be asking, “What pets are house pets?” “What pets do you have at home?” “What is your favorite pet?” We will also be talking about body parts. We will start with the face and what is on your face (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair). We will also be learning about apples. We will learn the different parts of an apple, the different colors of apples, and where apples come from. Since the season change in September we will learn about the change in seasons, the color changes in leaves and the weather changes.
Social Studies – During the month of September we celebrate Johnny Appleseed. We will explore who Johnny Appleseed was and what he did. We will eat apples, applesauce, make apple crafts, and paint with apple halves.
